If you break it down into its core meaning, the real meaning of “WC” is actually very clear.

The source of the title is related to the history of toilets.

When plumbing in the indoor space became more popular for homes, many converted their closets to tiny rooms with toilets within.

These were the only areas inside the house that had running water in the house.

A lot of people today refer to the space with the toilet as the bathroom.

But bathrooms are typically thought to be a room with a bath, and this was completely distinct to the bathroom.

In a deleted TikTok account, @itsnathannyc writes the following: Before indoor plumbing, there was actually space for a bathtub, which was a bathroom. The spout was, however, outside. You had to get water into the tub using an empty bucket, then heat it before pouring it into the tub.

The indoor plumbing is a reality, and already there’s the bathroom in the room in the bathroom, but where do you place the toilet? Place it in a closet. It’s the easiest spot to place the toilet.

Because they were the only place within the home that had running water in them the house, they were later referred to as water closets.

To begin, WC is an abbreviation meaning “water closet,” which was a term employed in the early 1900s for toilets due to the majority of them being installed in a closet or cabinet. Since then, WC has been utilized in lieu of bathroom to denote rooms that have toilets but no bath, per Plumb World.

In addition, the TikToker shows that “WC” stands for “water closet”.
