During a conversation with Canada’s newly appointed Prime Minister, Mark Carney, Donald Trump recently expressed the concept of elevating Canada to become the 51st state of the US. Following their April 28 general election victory, this meeting was their first since Carney into office.

Since assuming office as the 47th President, Trump has imposed tariffs on various nations, including a noteworthy 25 per cent penalty on Canadian exports. He advised Canada to become a state to escape these levies. Canada has angrily rejected this idea, though. Former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said before that it was “never going to happen” to join the United States. Reacting to Trump’s tariffs, Canada also levies 25 per cent taxes on American goods.

Though the specifics of their exchange remain mostly unclear, Trump and Carney spoke about several topics during their discussion at the White House. Given Canada’s firm posture on preserving its sovereignty, Trump’s idea to make it a state seems more of a provocative recommendation than a major policy decision.

President Donald Trump and Mark Carney complimented each other recently in an unexpected show of mutual respect despite continuous conflict. While Carney said Trump was a “transformational president,” Trump labelled Carney a “very talented person.”

Still, one thing was clear: Canada is not for sale, notwithstanding the compliments. Carney firmly said, “Canada is never going to be for sale,” echoing the view taken by his predecessor. Emphasizing that some sites are just off-limits in real estate, he likened Canada to famous sites like Buckingham Palace and the Oval Office.

“Based on meetings with Canada’s owners over the past few months, it is not for sale. Never for sale, ever,” Carney said.

On May 6, this conference took place at the White House, where both leaders covered a range of subjects but focused especially on Canada’s sovereignty. Carney’s forceful pronouncement supports Canada’s will to keep its autonomy and character.

The prime minister underlined in a recent speech that Canadians are “masters in our own home” and that they can provide for themselves far more than any foreign government could take away.

In a turn of events that was absolutely unexpected, President Trump utterly disregarded this message.  He responded in the same manner as the pop superstar Justin Bieber, saying, “Never say never.” His answer was similar to what Bieber said.

Trump said, “I’ve encountered many situations that seemed impossible but ultimately became achievable.”

This conversation occurred after Trump and the Canadian Ambassador David Carney met. Expert in body language Beth Dawson watched how they interacted on the White House steps. Although Carney seemed forceful, she pointed out that he also showed characteristics of anxiety and subserviency.

“The elbow touch indicates he seeks to connect on equal terms,” Dawson said. His attitude is one of resolve. Carney is not passive; rather, he is wary not to come across as too forceful and seems slightly afraid.

Viewers will be eager to see how these relationships shape future interactions as the crisis develops.
