Donald Trump says he thinks Vladimir Putin is more willing than ever to sign an agreement with Ukraine after their meeting in Alaska.
On Friday, August 15, Trump met with Putin to talk about how to end the war that has been going on between Russia and Ukraine for the past three years.
At the discussion, the Russian leader warned about a huge mistake that may have stopped the war from starting.
Regarding Joe Biden, Putin stated that during his final meeting with the previous government in 2022, he aimed to persuade his American colleague that hostilities shouldn’t be escalated to the point of no return.
I told him straight out that it was a major mistake, he said. Today, President Trump said that there would be no conflict if he were president. I can say for sure that it will be true.
On Friday, the peace deal was not approved, but Trump left the summit saying, “We have a good chance of making this happen.”
Since then, the president has said similar things to a group of European leaders yesterday night (August 18) in a private chat with Emmanuel Macron, the president of France.
“I think he wants to make a deal with me, no matter how crazy it sounds,” Trump says in a hot mic interview with CBS News.
People think “he” means Putin.
It seems like yesterday’s meeting went well, which is something that couldn’t be said of President Zelenskyy’s visit to the White House in February.
Zelenskyy went to Washington by himself last time, but this time he was with French President Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
Starmer, who has been against Zelenskyy in Ukraine for a long time, said at the end of the session that “real improvements” had been made.
According to Starmer, the meetings were productive and beneficial. “There was a real sense of unity among the presidents Trump and Zelenskyy and the European leaders who were present,” he said.
The UK prime minister talked about two important results of the talks. The first thing is that the coalition of willing countries will now work with the US to make sure that security guarantees are put into place.
He continued by saying that this is extremely important for the security of the UK, Europe, and Ukraine.
The second major result was that there will be an agreement between President Putin and President Zelenskyy. This happened when Trump and Putin exchanged phone numbers. Trump and President Putin met this afternoon. It was a trilateral, and then President Trump added to it.
That means that Ukraine has to be at the table when it comes to some issues, such territorial disputes, prisoner swaps, and the very serious matter of bringing children back.
These led to two important things that came out of today’s meeting. These are good things that happened. There was a real sense of togetherness. Today, we’ve made a lot of progress.
