‘There’s a lot of people who canโt even afford eggs’
Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin all-women trip to space has come under fire from various celebrities for being tone deaf to the current state of the world.
If you thought therapy was expensive charging at least a dollar an hour, well,ย Blue Origin’sย all-women spaceflight makes it seem cheap.
For a mere four minutes inย spaceย and total of 11 minutes round-trip, a six-women team – including the likes ofย Katy Perry, Gayle King and Lauren Sรกnchez – became the first all-female crew to visit space since Valentina Tereshkova was sent up in 1963.
The cost for that four minutes of space-seeing? Well,ย accordingย to Pocketmags it costs about $64 to $88 million – and that’s per seat. Times by six and that’s $384,000,000 to $528,000,000 – and that’s not even taking into account all the other stuff.
Either way, it’s a heck of a lot ofย moneyย and it’s not taken long for otherย celebritiesย to weigh in.
In an episode ofย Today with Jenna and Friendsย which aired on April 3,ย New Girlย star Olivia Munn questioned what the all-women crew are ‘doing,’ย quotedย by Page Six.

She continued: “I know this probably isnโt the cool thing to say, but there are so many other things that are so important in the world right now. I know this is probably obnoxious, but like, itโs so much money to go to space, and thereโs a lot of people who canโt even afford eggs.
“Whatโs the point? Is it historic that you guys are going on a ride? I think itโs a bit gluttonous.”
The actor argued ‘space exploration’ is typically about ‘further[ing] our knowledge and to help mankind’.
“What are they gonna do up there that has made it better for us down here?”
And Munn wasn’t the only one to comment on the spaceflight, as fellow actor Amy Schumer also took to her Instagram on the day of the launch to poke fun at it.

Schumer took to her story and jokingly told followers: “Guys, last second, they added me to space and I’m going to space. I’m bringing this thing, it has no meaning to me but it was in my bag and I was like on the subway and I got the text.
“[…] Thank you to everyone who got me here and I’ll see you guys in space.”
Calling Perry, Sanchez and Newam her ‘guiding lights’ through the ‘journey,’ Schumer resolved: “How high were the people who came up with the name for space. They were like, ‘What should we call it? There’s so much space’ And they were like, ‘That’s it.’
“That’s the best they could do? Space? But okay. I’m going there and I can’t wait.”
Don’t Worry Darling director Olivia Wilde also took to her story to share a meme of Perry, captioning the post: “Billion dollars bought some good memes I guess.”

However, those onboard the flight have hit out at any criticism.
Kingย toldย People ‘anybody that’s criticizing it doesnโt really understand what is happening here’ given the ‘response’ the crew has been receiving from ‘young women’ and ‘girls’.

She added: “I get really fired up. I would love to have them come to Blue Origin and see the thousands of employees that donโt just work here but they put their heart and soul into this vehicle.”
