Donald Trump has sent Canada a strong message after he put 35% tariffs on the country that is next door to him.
Sky News said that the US president’s move, which he says is aimed at getting Canada to do something about fentanyl trafficking, has generated more economic problems between Canada and the US.

President Trump posted an email on Truth Social that showed the tariffs. They come after a number of strong actions taken against other countries, like a 50% tax on Brazil that could damage the world’s supply of coffee and orange juice.
Trump has also talked of raising tariffs by 15–20% on “all of the remaining countries,” which shows that his government is determined to stick to its protectionist agenda.’
In his letter to Canadian Premier Mark Carney, Trump said, “It is a great honor for me to send you this letter because it shows how strong and committed our trading relationship is and that the United States of America has agreed to keep working with Canada even though Canada has financially retaliated against the United States.”

He went on to say, “As you may remember, the United States put tariffs on Canada to deal with the country’s fentanyl crisis.” This is mainly because Canada can’t prohibit the drug from getting into our country. Canada didn’t work with the United States; instead, it raised its own tariffs.
The president said that the tariffs will be put into place with great force. He also said, “Starting August 1, 2025, we will charge Canada a tariff of 35% on Canadian products sent into the United States, separate from all sectoral tariffs.”

He also told the public that items that are sent to Canada to avoid this higher tariff will still have to pay that higher tariff, and any actions Canada takes in response could lead to further higher tariffs.
Trump also gave Canadian businesses another option: enterprises that construct or make products in the United States will not have to pay tariffs, and approvals will be handled quickly, professionally, and on a regular basis—in other words, in a few weeks.
The US president concluded his letter by indicating that he would remain open to negotiations. He said, “If Canada works with me to stop the flow of fentanyl, we may look into changing the letter.”

These tariffs could go up or down, depending on how well we get along with your country. You will always be happy with the United States of America. Thanks for paying attention to this!
On social media, Prime Minister Mark Carney talked about how Canada is committed to protecting its economy and dealing with the fentanyl problem.
During the ongoing trade talks between Canada and the US, the Canadian government has always defended our workers and businesses. He said, “The government will keep defending them while we get ready for the new deadline of August 1st.”

Carney added that Canada has made important progress in getting rid of fentanyl in North America. We are making Canada better. The federal and provincial governments, as well as the territories, have all done a lot of work toward building a Canadian economy.
We are ready to start a number of important new projects that will benefit the country. We are making our business relationships with people all over the world stronger.
In the meantime, Trump hinted at more pronouncements about global concerns. He told reporters, “I think I’ll have a major statement to make on Russia on Monday.” He also said, “I’m disappointed in Russia, but we’ll see what happens over the next couple of weeks.”
