JoJo Siwa has talked about a recent joke Miley Cyrus made about her s**uality. She doesn’t think it was meant to hurt her, but she’s not ignoring it either.

On June 7, 2025, at the WorldPride Dreamland DC event, fans were shocked when Cyrus sent them a video greeting.

The “Flowers” singer appears in a food closet in the video, and she starts with “Oh my god.” I haven’t gone in there since I was in sixth grade. If this Pride is the right time for you, enjoy coming out of the closet. It shouldn’t be a month; it should be a year. It ought to be endless.

Later, she said something funny: “I’m going back in the closet to get more pretzels and find JoJo Siwa and bring her back out.”

The comment, which seemed to be a reference to Siwa’s new relationship with Chris Hughes from Love Island UK, had a lot of different reactions.  Siwa has spoken up now.

On June 12, the 22-year-old posted on Instagram about the experience, including old pictures from her Miley-themed fifth birthday party and more recent pictures of her enjoying the singer.

“I was happy at my 5th birthday having a Miley-themed party, and I’m still happy now at 22,” she added.

If you know me, you know that Miley is my number one. I’ve been influenced by her since I was two years old.

Siwa said that the joke made her think twice.

“I wasn’t sure how I felt about things for a couple of days,” she wrote. “But I’ve started to come to some thoughts.” I don’t think Miley meant what she said at WorldPride.

I really think it was supposed to be a joke, but it wasn’t a very good one.  Not something I or the world needs to hear any day of the week.

She states that when she reached out to Cyrus individually, he only replied with affection, saying, “All love.” Always [sic].

“The most lovely thing I’ve learned in the last five years is that love is a magnificent rainbow,” Siwa said as she concluded her message, which was one of empowerment and encouragement. Don’t doubt yourself, don’t question yourself, just adore…  People will always judge, and that can be very hard to deal with, especially when it’s from someone you love and look up to.

“You only have one life. Keep it, make it yours, discover your happiness, and love.

This moment comes just a few weeks after Siwa talked about how her identity is changing. She told Danny Beard, the winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK, that she now identifies as queer while she was on Celebrity Big Brother UK.

    I always thought I was a l**bian, but now that I’m here, I realize, “Oh, I’m not a l**bian, I’m queer.” And I think that’s pretty wonderful.

She said, “I’m changing letters!” I lost the L and moved on to the Q, darling!

In 2021, JoJo made her first public appearance when she posted a photo of herself sporting a blouse that read, “Best. G@y. Cousin. Ever.”
She later admitted to PEOPLE that she never felt compelled to identify as g@y or queer. She continued, “I always just say g@y or queer because I think the word is cool.” Since I’ve always been pans**ual, I would say that I am. My human is my human.
