    What we know after an airplane carrying 242 crashes shortly after takeoff

    Air India flight bound for London was destroyed in Ahmedabad earlier this morning. Here’s all we know about the crash so far.

    Authorities have confirmed that flight AI171 was flying to Ahmedabad within India to London Gatwick it crashed shortly after it took off from the runway.

    A popular video that is being shared on social media depicts how the wreckage of an aircraft collision near the airport. More news are released about what took place.

    What caused the crash of the plane?

    The plane that was bound for London crashed into a residential zone known as Meghani Nagar. The crash was confirmed by Faiz Ahmed Kidwai who is the Director General of the Directorate of Civil Aviation, told The Associated Press.

    The area is visible in video clips covered with dust and smoke that covers the sky following the impact of the crash.

    How many passengers were aboard?

    Indian authorities have confirmed that more than 244 passengers were aboard that plane when it crashed.

    The rescue teams have been dispatched to the scene since emergency services are at the scene, and are reportedly taking victims of the crash on stretchers.

    The airline claims that the aircraft was carrying 242 passengers and crew members aboard the aircraft Boeing 787-8′.

    It further states: From these the 169, 169 are Indian nationals 53 are British citizens, 1 Canadian national, and seven Portuguese citizens .

    India’s minister of civil aviation, Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu has commented on the incident, saying: I personally monitor the circumstances and instructed all emergency and aviation agencies to take quick and coordinated actions.

    What did Air India said?

    London Gatwick airport confirmed that flight AI171 was scheduled to land at in London at 6:30 P.M local time. However, in accordance with the Aviation Safety Network database, the spokesperson for Air India said: Flight AI171 which was operating from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick was involved in a crash today 12 June 2025.

    The last message from the plane at 8:08:51 UTC (shortly prior to 9.09am BST), just minutes after taking off. The plane involved is an Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner with registration the VT-ANB.

    The report added that the signal received from the aircraft was lost “less than a minute” after the plane took off’.

    The chairman of Air India, N Chandrasekaran, offered his condolences to the victims, saying that the incident is an accident that was tragic ‘.

    He went on to say, “With great sadness, I can confirm that an Air India flight, AI171, from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick was involved in a terrible crash today.” We are thinking of and praying for the family and friends of everyone who was hurt in this terrible event.

    More updates will be released when we have more confirmed information. An emergency center is in operation and a support teams has been established to assist families.

    An Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, International Airport spokesperson, has confirmed on the internet that the crash of Flight AI171 caused the airport to be “currently inactive” and that all flights are suspended ‘temporarily for a period of time until further notification’.

    It suggests passengers check with their airlines to find the most recent information prior to heading towards the terminal’, as the airport asks for cooperation and patience while authorities deal with this situation’.
