Renner, well-known for playing Hawkeye in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, talks of the moment of his accident and the fierce physical fight that followed. He reports that his heart rate dropped noticeably while lying on the ice. “As I lay on the ice, my heart rate slowed,” he says, noting that he felt an extreme tiredness at that point without realising his family and friends were worried.
He describes the physical toll of surviving in frigid conditions, drawing comparisons between his efforts and a taxing exercise: “After about thirty minutes on the ice of breathing manually for so long, an effort akin to doing ten or twenty push-downs per minute for half an hour… that’s when I died.” Renner says bluntly, “I died, right there on the driveway to my house.”
Renner stresses that the immediate threat was not just from his inner wounds but also from the severe cold, even though he suffered from serious injuries involving multiple fractures and considerable blood loss.
